Overview of NUHW

Foundation

NUHW was originally established by the mother group of Niigata Sogo Gakuen in 2001. It had two faculties consisting of five departments. In the Faculty of Medical Technology (FMT) there were four departments: the Departments of Physical Therapy (PT), Occupational Therapy (OT), Speech, Language & Hearing Sciences (ST), and Health and Nutrition (HN). In the Faculty of Social Welfare, there was the Department of Social Welfare (DSW). The initial enrollment quota of the five departments was 260, and there were 321 students enrolled in the first year.

History

2000 Dec. Establishment of Niigata Sogo Gakuen School Corporation was approved.
Niigata University of Health and Welfare was approved
2001 Feb. Campus and school buildings were completed.
Apr. Niigata University of Health and Welfare (henceforth NUHW) was founded.
The Faculty of Medical Technology (with the Departments of Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences, and Health and Nutrition) and the Faculty of Social Welfare (with the Department of Social Welfare) were established.
2005 Apr. Graduate School of Health and Welfare (Master’s Program, Major in Rehabilitation Sciences and Major in Social Welfare) was founded.
Department of Health and Sports was established in the Faculty of Medical Technology.
2006 Apr. Department of Nursing was established in the Faculty of Medical Technology.
Sep. Research collaboration was established with the Khabarovsk Far East General Medical College, Russia.
2007 Apr. The two faculties were reorganized into three faculties: Faculty of Medical Technology, Faculty of Health Sciences, and Faculty of Social Welfare.
Departments of Health and Nutrition, Health and Sports, and Nursing were established in Faculty of Health Sciences.
Department of Prosthetics & Orthotics and Assistive Technology was established in Faculty of Medical Technology.
Major in Health and Welfare of the Graduate School (Doctoral Program) was established.
Major in Health Sciences (Master’s Program) was established.
May. Research collaboration was established with the California State University Fresno, USA.
2009 Jul. The collective proposal by five universities under the initiative of NUHW -"Joint Development of the Curriculum Based on Educational Module for Inter-Professional Collaboration to Better Attain QOL"- was adopted by the Ministry of Education as part of their Strategic University Collaboration Support Program.
Research collaboration was established with the National Sirindhorn Rehabilitation Center, Thailand.
Oct. Training of Prevention for Lifestyle-Related Diseases (LSRD) was carried out which was requested by JICA (the Japan International Cooperation Agency). 8 participants from 4 countries of Republic of Fiji, Republic of Vanuatu, Solomon Islands and Republic of the Marshall Islands.
2010 Apr. Department of Health Informatics was established in the Faculty of Healthcare Management.
Aug. Research collaboration was established with the Hung Kuang University, Taiwan.
Research collaboration was established with the Angeles University Foundation, the Philippines.
Oct. Training of Prevention for Lifestyle-Related Diseases (LSRD) was carried out which was requested by JICA (the Japan International Cooperation Agency). 5 participants from 4 countries of Republic of Fiji, Solomon Islands, Kingdom of Tonga and Republic of the Marshall Islands.
Nov. Institute for Human Movement and Medical Sciences (IHMMS) was founded.
2011 Apr. Department of Clinical Engineering and Medical Technology was established in the Faculty of Medical Technology.
Aug. Research collaboration was established with the University of Hawaii at Manoa, John A. Burns School of Medicine, Department of Medical Technology, USA.
Oct. Research collaboration was established with the University of Santo Tomas, Philippines.
Training of Prevention for Lifestyle-Related Diseases (LSRD) was carried out which was requested by JICA (the Japan International Cooperation Agency). 10 participants from 5 countries of Republic of Fiji, Republic of Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Kingdom of Tonga and Republic of the Marshall Islands.
The tenth anniversary of the NUHW was held.
Dec. Research collaboration was established with the University of East Anglia School of Nursing and Midwives, UK.
2012 Oct. Training of Prevention for Lifestyle-Related Diseases (LSRD) was carried out which was requested by JICA (the Japan International Cooperation Agency). 7 participants from 6 countries of Republic of Fiji, Republic of Vanuatu, Republic of the Marshall Islands, Republic of Kiribati, Tuvalu and Republic of Palau.
2013 Aug. Research collaboration was established with Taipei Veterans General Hospital, Taiwan.
Oct. Training of Prevention for Lifestyle-Related Diseases (LSRD) was carried out which was requested by JICA (the Japan International Cooperation Agency). 11 participants from 3 countries of Republic of Fiji, Solomon Islands and Republic of Vanuatu.
2014 Apr. Department of Orthoptics and Visual Sciences was established in the Faculty of Medical Technology.
Major in Health Informatics and Business Administration were established. (M.H.I. & B.A.)
Oct. Training of Prevention for Lifestyle-Related Diseases (LSRD) [Phase II] was carried out which was requested by JICA. 11 participants from 3 countries of Republic of Fiji, Solomon Islands and Republic of Vanuatu.
2015 Feb. Research collaboration was established with Mahidol University, Thailand.
Sep. Research collaboration was established with Kyonggi University, Korea.
Oct. Training course of Prevention for Lifestyle-Related Diseases (LSRD) was carried out which was requested by JICA. 14 participants from Thailand.
2016 Mar. Research collaboration was established with Hong Bang International University, Vietnam.
May. Research collaboration was established with National Yang Ming University, Taiwan.
2017 Apr. Department of Emergency Medical Sciences was established in the Faculty of Medical Technology.
Sep. Research collaboration was established with Chung Shan Medical University, Taiwan.
2018 Apr. The four faculties were reorganized into six faculties: Faculty of Rehabilitation, Faculty of Medical Technology, Faculty of Health Sciences, Faculty of Nursing, Faculty of Social Welfare and Faculty of Healthcare Management.
Department of Radiological Technology was established in the Faculty of Medical Technology.
Aug. Research collaboration was established with Department of Radiological University, Mahidol University, Thailand.
2019 Jan. Research collaboration was established with Catholic University of Pusan, South Korea.
Mar. Research collaboration was established with Ciberjaya University College of Medical Science, Malaysia.
Apr. Research collaboration was established with Pacific National University, Russia.
Dec. Research collaboration was established with Fooyin University, Taiwan.
